What Is Workers Compensation Physiotherapy?

Workers Compensation physiotherapy involves treatment for injuries or illnesses that occurred at work or as a result of your work duties. Under the NSW Workers Compensation scheme, injured workers are entitled to access physiotherapy treatment to support their recovery.
Our goal is to help you recover from your workplace injury, restore your functional capacity, and support your safe return to work. Treatment is covered by your Workers Compensation insurer when proper procedures are followed.

How to Get Started with Workers Compensation Physiotherapy

Before attending your first physiotherapy appointment, you need to complete several important steps:

1

Report Your Injury

Notify your employer or supervisor about your work-related injury as soon as possible. Your employer must be informed within 6 months of the injury occurring.

2

See Your GP

Visit your General Practitioner to have your injury assessed. Your GP will complete a Certificate of Capacity and help initiate your Workers Compensation claim with the insurer.

3

Obtain Your Claim Number

Once your claim is lodged, you will receive a Workers Compensation claim number from your insurer. You’ll need this number to access physiotherapy treatment.

4

Book Your Physiotherapy

Contact Aurum Physiotherapy to book your initial assessment. Bring your claim number, Certificate of Capacity, and any scan results or medical reports to your first appointment.

What You Need for Your First Appointment

To ensure your first Workers Compensation physiotherapy session runs smoothly, please bring the following:

How Many Physiotherapy Sessions Are Covered?

Under NSW Workers Compensation legislation, injured workers are entitled to receive up to 8 physiotherapy sessions without requiring prior approval from the insurer. These initial sessions must be provided by a SIRA-approved physiotherapist.
If you require ongoing treatment beyond the initial 8 sessions, your physiotherapist will submit the necessary documentation to your insurer for approval. This request outlines the continued treatment plan and how it supports your recovery and return to work.

Tailored Treatment Plan

A personalised treatment plan is developed to address your specific injury and work demands. We set clear goals to improve your mobility, strength, endurance, and functional capacity.

Functional Assessments

Regular functional and lifting assessments track your progress and objectively measure your capacity to perform work tasks. These assessments guide your return to work planning.

Return to Work Support

We work with you, your employer, and your insurer to develop suitable duties and progression strategies. Our goal is to help you return to work safely and confidently.

About Certificates of Capacity

A Certificate of Capacity is a key document in the NSW Workers Compensation system. It outlines your injury, your current capacity for work, and the treatment required for recovery.
The initial Certificate of Capacity must be completed by a medical practitioner (your GP or specialist). For subsequent certificates, SIRA-approved physiotherapists can complete them if the injury is within their scope of practice.
Your Certificate of Capacity helps your insurer make decisions about your weekly payments and helps your employer provide suitable duties during your recovery.
